What is Recovery?
Recovery is more than stopping substance use
Recovery is the process of making changes that support your overall wellbeing. It can involve:
-
Addressing mental and physical health
-
Rebuilding relationships
-
Finding stability in housing or employment
-
Taking accountability for mistakes and changing behavior so we don't repeat harm
-
Rediscovering meaning and purpose
-
Learning how to navigate life without substances
Many people come to us thinking recovery means simply giving up alcohol or drugs. That's part of it for many people, but recovery goes deeper than that.
It's also nonlinear. Setbacks happen. Needs change. Progress doesn't always move in a straight line, and that's okay. What matters is that support is available at every stage.
There are many paths to recovery
Turning Point Center of Central Vermont supports all paths to recovery. No single approach works for everyone. Some people find their path through 12-step programs. Others connect with peer support, recovery coaching or community groups.
Some connect with spiritual or religious groups, or find peace in exercise, nature or many different hobbies. Some use harm reduction strategies while working toward their goals. Many combine approaches over time.
We don't believe there's only one right way. Our role is to help you figure out what feels right for you — and to connect you with the resources, information and people that make that possible.
What recovery support looks like at TPCCV
Turning Point Center of Central Vermont is a peer-led recovery community center. The people who work with you have lived experience with substance use recovery. They understand what you're navigating because they've been there.
Support here is guided by you. Our team can help you explore options, make sense of the resources available and connect you with the right next step — whether that's a recovery coach, a peer support group, a meeting, or simply someone to talk to.
We're open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, at 17 Ayers Street, Barre, Vermont.
Recovery is possible for anyone
Recovery isn't reserved for people with a certain background, a certain level of motivation or a certain degree of crisis. It's available to anyone who wants support, at any stage of their substance use journey.
Whether you're not sure you have a problem, actively looking for a way forward, returning after a relapse or years into recovery and looking for continued community, this is a place for you.
FAQs
Recovery means different things to different people. At its core, it's an ongoing process of rebuilding a life that feels worth living — one that includes health, connection and the ability to manage life's challenges without substances. It’s not just about stopping use. It’s about what comes next.
Not always. Sobriety generally refers to abstinence from alcohol or drugs. Recovery is broader: it can include sobriety, but it also includes emotional wellbeing, relationships, stability and connection. Some people are abstinent; others are practicing harm reduction and trying to become healthier. We support all pathways. This is your recovery. You decide what's right for you.
No. You can call, email or stop by without making any commitment. Many people come to us just to learn what's available. That's a fine place to start.
