Recovery Coaching

Guided by lived experience

Support from someone who's been there

A Recovery Coach is someone who has been through substance use and recovery themselves, and who is trained to help others navigate that same journey. At Turning Point Center of Central Vermont, our coaches bring both professional training and personal experience to every relationship.

Recovery coaching is not therapy. It's practical, consistent, peer-based support that helps you set goals, work through challenges and build the life and community you want in recovery.

What does a recovery coach do?

Your Recovery Coach works with you to create a Recovery Plan, a personalized roadmap that identifies where you want to go and what's getting in the way. From there, your coach helps you take concrete steps toward your goals and connects you with the resources that fit your situation.

Throughout the process, your coach is a consistent, reliable presence — someone who knows you, checks in with you, and advocates for you. Recovery coaching is structured and scheduled, which means you'll have regular, dedicated time together — not just a number to call when things go wrong.

Recovery coaching as part of a broader plan

Recovery coaching works alongside — not instead of — other forms of support. Many people who work with a Recovery Coach also attend All Recovery meetings, SMART Recovery, 12 Step meetings, peer support groups, or other TPCCV programming. Your coach can help you figure out what combination of support makes sense for where you are right now.

Our Programs & Services

Who can work with a recovery coach?

Recovery coaching is available to people at many different stages, whether you're just beginning to consider making a change, recently out of treatment, working through a difficult period, or building toward long-term stability. You don't need to have everything figured out to get started.

TPCCV primarily serves people in Central Vermont, though we welcome anyone who needs support and isn't connected with a center in their area.

How it works

To connect with a Recovery Coach, you can self-refer using the online referral form and at the Recovery Center, or call us directly at (802) 479-7373. You don't need a referral from a doctor, counselor or other provider to get started.

Recovery coaching at TPCCV typically runs for about six months, though the length is flexible based on your needs and goals. Some people engage for a shorter period; others continue longer. The pace and focus are guided by you.

What makes our coaches different

Our Recovery Coaches complete the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy and Ethics Training, log 500 hours of supervised work, and pass the IC&RC exam to earn certification. Many go on to hold the Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) Certificate through the Office of Professional Regulation. Lived experience is not a bonus — it's a core qualification. It shapes how our coaches listen, communicate and understand what you're going through.

Every Recovery Coach at TPCCV works under the supervision of an IC&RC Certified and PRSS Certified Recovery Coach. That oversight isn't a formality. It's what keeps coaching safe, consistent and professional.

TPCCV coaches are also equipped to help you navigate complex systems, including mental health services, housing, employment, legal matters and other community resources. Your coach isn’t just a support person. They're a navigator.
